We provide comprehensive assessments to help with understanding and supporting a child or young person’s learning, development and behaviour in their education setting.

We work with children, young people and adults aged 3-24 years. We explore strengths and needs in the areas of intelligence, processing, memory, literacy and maths. Any other concerns can also be explored, such as emotional needs, attention, social skills, sensory processing, motor skills, and behaviour.

It is not always possible to cover all areas of development, eg if a child is very young or becomes dysregulated, but we will always try to explore as much as possible.

Recommendations are made for supporting your child’s education, eg teaching strategies, useful resources and additional targeted teaching. A letter and certificate for your child are also included.

The following are included in our comprehensive assessments, where relevant:

• Assessment and diagnosis of general or specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia and dyscalculia.
• Identification of giftedness/high learning potential.
• Screening for neurodivergence. Diagnostic assessments for autism and ADHD need to be carried out by an appropriately qualified healthcare team. We can help you explore whether pursuing a diagnostic assessment may be helpful and advise you on possible next steps. We are experienced in working with children who mask or present with a PDA profile.
• Advice on supporting your child within their educational setting, including where their needs relate to bereavement, bullying, transitions, revision, mental health, neurodivergence and/or medical conditions, including Tourette’s, diabetes and epilepsy.

Where relevant, advice and recommendations are included for an EHCP, eg type of education setting, level of individual support, environmental adjustments and staff training. Information is specific and quantifiable. We are experienced working with children who are educated at home or through EOTAS.

You can use our report as part of requesting/appealing an EHC needs assessment or an Annual Review, but we do not do tribunal work.

The report takes up to 4 weeks.

If there is evidence that your child has a learning difficulty or giftedness then this will be clearly explained and diagnosed/identified. Sometimes recommendations are made for referrals to other professionals for additional assessments and to receive a specific program of support to help your child if needed.

Our reports are written by fully qualified Chartered Educational Psychologists who are registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). Under SEND law and guidance, schools and nurseries should consider advice and recommendations from appropriately qualified professionals when planning support for a child. While they are not legally required to follow every recommendation, they should give our reports due consideration alongside their own professional judgement, statutory responsibilities, and available resources. If your child’s school or nursery has any questions about a report or its recommendations, they are welcome to contact us.

Parents/carers may wish to request an EHC needs assessment from their Local Authority if their child has, or may have, special educational needs and may require additional provision beyond what is typically available in a mainstream setting. You can use an educational psychology report as part of this process to evidence your child’s needs, but it does not guarantee that the Local Authority will agree to carry out an EHC needs assessment. The report will clearly explain your child’s strengths, barriers affecting their learning and make recommendations for provisions. Information is specific and quantifiable. The report can also be used by you and your child’s school/nursery to plan ways for meeting your child’s needs and helping them make progress. Please note we do not offer Tribunal services.

We value and listen to lived experience from the autistic community, and our recommendations are guided by current neurodiversity-affirming practice. In light of this, we do not recommend or include Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) in our reports.

Yes we are experienced in working with children who mask or have a PDA profile. Assessments are planned and adapted to accommodate your child’s needs as much as is reasonably possible. We work at their pace and do our best to help them feel safe and calm throughout the process.

We start at 9am and your child will have breaks as and when they need. Most assessments finish at lunch time, though some children take longer or need more breaks. We also give verbal feedback at the end, so please allow until 2pm. Children are usually tired after the assessment, so most parents/carers withdraw them from school for the day, so that they can rest afterwards.

Most assessments take place at the psychologist’s home, but some assessments need to take place at your child’s home or school. We will confirm the location after reading the referral form.

If there are concerns regarding social skills or aggressive/unusual behaviours, then an observation at school is advised, otherwise this is optional. It may not be possible for us to observe your child if their school location is further than we travel for work. We will advise further once we have read the referral form.

Assessment dates will be offered after the main referral form has been completed and reviewed by the EdPsych4Kids team (usually within 5 days), and all relevant additional documents have been received, such as existing reports from other professionals.

Fees are listed on the referral form. An invoice will be sent to you on the first day of the month in which your child will be assessed. Payment is made by bank transfer. If a school or other organisation is paying, then the invoice is sent at the time of booking.

Reports usually take 4 weeks (excluding school holidays). You will be contacted if there are any unexpected delays.

We recommend sharing the report with your child’s school/nursery and arranging a meeting to plan next steps. There will be suggestions for teaching strategies, interventions and resources to help your child with areas of difficulty. You can discuss all of these with your child’s education setting. It may help to write down some questions and send them to the school/nursery in advance of the meeting. If there are any questions about the report, please contact us.

Once an assessment date has been set you will receive an information sheet to share with your child. You could say to your child that we will be doing some activities that help us understand their strengths and how they learn. Our job is to give teachers ideas for how they can help your child with things they might find difficult at school, such as concentrating, learning, feeling happy and talking with other children.
